Development and assessment of a streetscape biodiversity planting palette

Funders: City of Melbourne

Researchers: A/Prof Nick Williams, A/Prof John Rayner, Dr Caragh Threlfall, Jess Baumann

Year: 2017-2018

Background

In this project, we are developing a plant palette of over 70 species specifically designed to improve the biodiversity of streetscapes by providing resources for birds, bees and butterflies. Project results will inform future streetscape upgrades, providing information on plant growth conditions and tolerances, maintenance requirements, uses, and resources for biodiversity.

Four streets in the City of Melbourne will be planted with the palettes. We will then monitor plant health and biodiversity use, comparing the planted sites to control sites using before and after surveys.
